| The Lesson Study is
an initiative directed by the Numeracy Steering Committee to improve
student learning and the success of our at-risk learners.
Mathematics teachers are given full support to work collaboratively learning to plan effective lessons that incorporate both manipulatives and cooperative learning structures in support of student improvement. The Expert Panel on Mathematics clearly illustrated that students must be engaged by 'doing' mathematics to foster a deeper understanding of the fundamental concepts of each grade level. In this process teams of five teachers of the same grade are given time during the school day to collaboratively research and learn about mathematical learning styles and what the best teaching practices are to engage students. Collegiality and support are foundations of the program where teachers have time to speak professionally with their colleagues and truly become a community of learners. |
