Think Literacy Success Grades 7-12 > The Report of the Expert Panel on Students At Risk in Ontario > Ministry of Education / Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities Student Success Teachers Role

As with any teaching position, the main focus of this teacher is improving student learning.  However, moving away from the traditional classroom teacher role, this person is charged with working with students at-risk of failing their courses.

Credit recovery will be a significant commitment of time and resources.  As Dr. Alan King stated, students who have do not have all 16 credits by the end of grade 10 are at a significant higher risk of not graduating in four years with some not graduating at all.  With this in mind, the Student Success Teacher will work with students on areas of the curriculum that were not at the passing level.  Once a student has demonstrated success with these expectations the Principal of the school can grant the original credit to the student.  Students who were not successful will be placed in the Student Success Teachers class one period a day until they have completed the required work and demonstrated their improved understanding of course expectations.

Student Success Teachers will maintain contact with a number of identified at-risk students to ensure that these students are receiving the necessary support outside of the classroom.  The teachers will be aware of student performance with respect to assignment completion, all learning skills and provide guidance and support for these students to ensure their success.
