“The Cat’s Meow”

January 8th
“The Cat’s Meow” is a column that updates the Opeongo community on school events and the efforts and endeavours of Opeongo’s students and staff. The column is in its fourth year of existence and has traditionally been printed in The Eganville Leader and in The Cobden Sun. Due to space issues in these papers, our column has often not made the press. We have therefore decided on a change of venue and will publish instead every second week on the Opeongo website. This year’s contributors are: Courtney Schruder, Jody Sell, Allie Kelly, Tabitha Macdonald and Josée Barrette. Our new “e-column” will begin publication on January 16th on this website.

Opeongo E-column update
May 26/06
In a busy time of year, Opeongo is wrapping up many of the extra-curricular activities, to make way for the summer lazy days. Opeongo soccer teams overall had a great run this year. It seems we have soccer stars on the rise because the junior boys and junior girls’ team made it to playoff May 25/06. Junior boys trounced RCI yesterday, winning a very fierce game, but came up short in their game against Bishop Smith. You guys did great!
Our junior girls’ team headed off to semi-finals as well. Unfortunately they were defeated by Fellows High. Coach Ms. Scott-Cole says “a truly awesome group of girls that chewed by most of their opposition.”
For the senior boys’ team, they played a very competitive season, and just missed the playoffs. Their coach Mr. Hammel refers to them as “ The hockey players, who play soccer.” Good work guys!
The senior girls’ finished their season with “despite having more talent and good looks that any other team in the country, the girls came up short this year, just missing the playoff spot.” Jackie Shields who is new to the sport, scored MIP, with fellow nominated players Kelly Hoffman, Jessica Laronde, and Katina Wren.
Opeongo track and field team has done extremely well this year. Forty-eight participants ventured to UOVHSAA, performed really well, and twenty-eight of them attended EOSSA at Terry Fox in Ottawa. Nine students from this team are heading out to East regionals in Belleville on Thursday. Good luck guys. You make Opeongo proud.
Meanwhile, while spring is blooming around the school, the greenhouse is blooming as well. Vegetables, flowers, and fruits of all kind are being grown in the green house in room 87. Open during school hours, the greenhouse has all sort of plants from pumpkins to watermelons.
In the school students had another successful spirit week. Students got to show their school spirit and attain points for their house teams. Monday was crazy hair day. Tuesday permitted students to bring out their extreme beachwear. Wednesday was wacky tacky day. Thursday was a day to wear school colours – green and gold. Including a pep rally with a teacher-graduate dodge ball game. The winners are still being decided. We ended the week with Friday’s backwards day.
We send congratulations to the Interact Club for fundraising enough money to build a school in Africa. With many fundraising activities going on, they have had much success with their endeavours. They held a dance at the beginning of May, with a very good turn out. Now that the school in Africa has been fundraised for, they are currently fundraising for Fairfield’s Assisted Living Centre in Eganville. They have many things on the go with ideas of a car wash, and the possibility of ice cream sales. Yummy!
Opeongo’s Concert Band took a fun trip to Halifax to the Atlantic Band Festival. With and outstanding performance, they received a silver standing in the level 200 series. Opeongo is proud to showcase the band in the upcoming ‘Spring Tunes’ Concert on Wednesday, May 31. Though the trip was long, it was a source of lifetime memories. So please come out and see the concert, you’ll be delighted to hear the many melodies of the entire music department.
On a final note, exams are approaching with 5 weeks left of school. Graduates are making final decisions on departures, or choosing courses for their return in the fall. Graduation is on June 28.
Hope to see everyone there, and happy travels!

Opeongo was buzzing with excitement before the holidays. Despite having a smaller assortment of baked goods than in previous instances, the Interact Club had a very successful Christmas bake sale before the holidays. They raised close to $100.00 for their “brick-by-brick campaign”, which aims to raise money to build a school in a third-world African country. Future plans for the club include a 30-hour famine set to take place in May, and a dance to be held sometime this spring.
Opeongo’s Christmas assembly proved once again that our school is full of talented people. The cafetorium was packed with students, teachers, parents and family friends, all wanting to be a part of the excitement. Many familiar and some new faces were seen taking the stage; all helping to create lots of memorable performances. Both teachers and students are a part of the agenda- consisting of bands, solo singers, a slide show, and the much-awaited student council skit. The assembly was a great way to enter the Christmas holidays!
